Lynn... Thank you for your reply. Here is what I do know about my ancestors, Elizabeth Tharp and her daughter Harriett V. Tharp - Stitt- Johnson.
Elizabeth Tharp moved to Louisa Co. Iowa in 1851 with her older daughter, Harriett (Mrs Samuel Stitt ). Someone had sent a note that Elizabeth had died Nov. 6, 1860 in Louisa Co. Iowa but I have not been able to find a death record for her. It has also been mentioned that she remarried but I do not have the mans name. If she died Nov. 6, 1860, before the state of Iowa required records, she may have been listed as
Mrs ________ _________ under her new husband name ( such as Mrs John Jones ). Do you have accress to death records for Nov. 6, 1860 and you could possibly check that date ?Harriett V. Stitt, Mrs Samuel Stitt(nee Tharp) moved with her mother, Elizabeth, and her siblings James, Thomas, Nicholas LEE and younger sister, Elizabeth Jr ( known also as Lib and Libby ) to Louisa Co. Iowa in 1851.
Do not know what happened to Samuel Stitt. Guessing that he died. Harriett Stitt remarried to Mr. William S. Johnson at Muscatine, Iowa in 1858.I have letter written by Thomas Tharp during the Civil War. In one letter dated April, 1863 he mentions that he had sent money to Harriett and that she had been very sick, and that she had lost four of her children since he had left for the war in the fall of 1861, and also that "Lib" Moorehead ( Mrs Samuel Moorehead ) had lost one of her children during that time period and that she too had been sick.
I believe I read somewhere that there was a Cholera epidemic during the middle 1800's in Iowa and I am guessing that is what may have taken the lives of those people.
I seek the place and date of death and burial for Elizabeth Tharp and her daughter Harriett V. (nee Tharp ) Stitt - Johnson. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Elva Tharp Clyne
