Page 8George Fath, one of the oldest residents of Wapello, died last Saturday June 3, 1910. at the age of 82 years. He was the second of a family of nine children born to Christian and Rosina (Kaiser) Fath, in Baden, Germany. He was born in 1828 and came with the family to America in 1846. There were forty nine days in crossing the Atlantic from Havre, France, to New York City. They located in Buffalo, N. Y., remaining there until 1856, when the family came to Louisa county, locating in Jefferson township.
The subject of this obituary was united in marriage in 1855 to Miss Caroline Wrightmann, whose parents later removed to this county. After his marriage Mr. Fath and his wife resided in Geneses county, N. Y., until 1862, when they came to Iowa and purchased an eighty acre farm in Jefferson township where they resided until the death of his wife in 1884. He was again married in 1885 to Mary Rentinger, a native of Baden, Germany. To them were born one daughter, Mary, the wife of August Ledke, who had made home for her father for several years, during his declining days.
Mr. Fath suffered a stroke of paralysis several years ago, from which he had never recovered. He has made his home in Wapello for the past twenty years or more. The funeral was held at the German church, of which he was a member Monday morning, June 6, 1910, conducted by Dr. R. J, Tillman, assisted by Rev. Fred Wahl, of Emdem, Ia. with interment in the Wapello cemetery.
