Page 1Fredrick Fielman, was born in Germany June 11, 1835, and died in Wapello, Iowa, April 24, 19180, aged 74 years, 10 months and 13 days. From the old country he came to America when but a boy. Leaving their parents and all other relatives in Germany, he and an older brother came to Chicago. With his brother, who is still living and is now over eighty years old, he made his home until the opening of the Civil war when, as a young man about twenty-seven years of age, he enlisted in 1862 in Company I, 20th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served until his honorable discharge on account of a severe gun shot wound.
He was married to Anna Marie Hoffman at Bloomington, Ill., March 28, 1864 and they made their home at Hagerstown, Maryland. Five children were born to them: Philip Frederick, who died when about one year old; William E., of Monmouth, Ill.; Maggie Allen, of Idaho springs, Colo.; Lydia H. Keck, of Wapello, Iowa and Frank M. Monmouth , Ill. After living in Maryland about three of four years he moved to Harrisburg, Pa., from there to Grandview, Iowa and then to Wapello about 1872. In the stronger years he worked at his trade as a carpenter. His physical strength and endurance was affected by his service and wound in the army.
His wife died April 10, 1875. He was married in April 1876, at Wapello, Iowa, to Louisa Ann Stoughton, who survives him. About nine years ago he had his first stroke of paralysis. This was followed by two other hard strokes and several lighter ones in the intervening years. About four years ago he suffered the loss of his speech and hearing. During the last several years, he needed much and constant care, he made his home here with his daughter, Mrs. J. G. Keck.
He was an interested member of the G. A. R., belonging to the A. M. Taylor post in Wapello. In his earlier years with his parents he belonged to the German Lutheran church. For a number of years his membership has been with the M. E. church in Wapello. The funeral service were held at he home of J. G. Keck at 10 a. m. Tuesday, conducted by Rev. J. E. Newsom and his body was laid to rest in the Wapello cemetery by his army comrades.
