Page 1Norman L. Stephens was born February 2, 1879, in Louisa county, Iowa and died at the home of his parents in Wapello, Iowa, April 25, 1909, aged 30 years, 2 months and 23 days. He was the son of Roswell and Alice Stephens. Unmarried, he made his home with his parents. His birthplace was in Grandview township, Louisa county. In his very early childhood, the family moved to Muscatine, Iowa, where they resided until 1895. Moving from the city of Muscatine to a farm in the country north of the county seat in the vicinity of High prairie, the next eight years were spent on the farm until 1903 when they moved to Wapello, where he has since made his home.
He was affectionate to his parents; held the respect of his companions; was kind hearted and drew about him warm friendships. He was honest; upright in his dealings, and had business spirit, tact and push; was resolute, battling against obstacles where others would have given up. In childhood he became a member of the Friends church, attending its sabbath school and taking part in its services. On coming to Wapello he united with the Methodist church where his membership remained until his death.
His last illness continued for nearly seven months. In it all he appreciated his home and the tender care of loved one. When he realized that he would not recover and that the end was near, in conversation with loved ones, he said he felt ready to go. Left to mourn his loss are father and mother, two sisters, Mrs. Eva Walthall, of Iowa Falls and Mrs. Cecil McCoy, of Albia, Iowa and a large number of relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by pastor J. E. Newsom. Interment in the Wapello cemetery.
