Bernard H. Garrett died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Furnas, near Letts, some time last Wednesday night. The exact hour is not known as he was found dead in his bed in the morning. He had been in feeble health for some years, gradually growing weaker, but his death at this time was entirely unexpected. Mr. Garrett was born in Kentucky about eighty years ago. He came to Iowa in 1852, settling in Muscatine county which continued his home until ten years ago when he sold his farm and has since made his home at Letts.

He was twice married, his first wife dying in 1872. Two children, both by her survive him. These are Middleton Garret, of Batavia and Mrs. William Furnas, near Letts. He had one child by his second wife which died in infancy. His sisters and brothers are all dead except one, Hon. Barton Garrett, of Letts.

Mr. Garrett was a man of influence. He was a member of the Kentucky legislature prior to his coming west; was also a member of the Iowa house of representatives from Muscatine county one or more terms. He was a veteran of the Mexican war, being one of the last survivors living in Louisa county. The funeral occurred last Friday afternoon at two o'clock with interment in the Letts cemetery.
