Herman Henry Grauwinkel was born July 3d, 1822, at Lipe Detmald, Germany, and came to this county in 1852, settling at St. Charles, Missouri. In 1835 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Kniper, of St. Louise, Mo., and in the same year they came to Iowa and settled in Wapello, where he sent the rest of his life, 48 years. His wife was not very robust, and died after a few years of married life. Later he found a good helpmate in Mrs. Oestreicher, of Iowa. This union was blessed with one son, Henry. They lived very happily until Mrs. Grauwinkel died on Jan. 2d, 1898. Since that time father Grauwinkel was very homesick and often expressed a desire to go to that better world, where the weary are at rest.

The deceased was an honest, upright man, a true Christian and a good citizen and the world was better for his having lived in it. He died Friday, May 1st, 1903, after short but severe suffering, with hope of eternal life, at this ripe age of 80 years, 9 months and 28 days. He leaves to mourn his death, besides his son Henry and family; one stepson Fr. Oestriecher; one adopted daughter, Mrs. Theo. Schwob; and one sister, Mrs. Caroline Huffman, all of which were present at the funeral. The funeral services were held from the home Monday at 9:30 a. m. and at Long Creek church at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. C. Schultze, interment in Long Creek cemetery.
