Harriet Fletcher Syphrit was born in Pike Co, O., Sept, 1835 and died at her home near Newport, Louisa Co, Ia, March 8, 1893. She was there for 57 years, 5 mos and 20 days of age. She was the oldest daughter of Joseph and Mary McNatton. When our subject was quite young she emigrated with here parents to the State of Missouri where they resided about seven years. From there they moved to Polk Co,, Iowa. After residing there for a time they emigrated to Louisa county. To them were born eight children, Joseph Henry who died at Blair, Neb., Apr. 1, 1879, Geo. W. who resides in Poste Co, Ind., Matthew D., who died in Grandview, Iowa, Dec. 13, 1860, Alfred Lynn who resides in Warren Co., Iowa. Albert Finley who was killed by accident in Marian Co., Iowa, Apr. 22, 1891 and Mary Elizabeth who is the wife of Levi M. Blake and resides near Columbus Junction, Iowa. The Mother of our subject died Aug. 1, 1873. Father McNatton died Feb. 19, 1893 in the 84 year of his age. Both of them are buried in the Grandview cemetery.

On the 8th day of Apr 1855 Harriet was united in marriage to Joseph B. Syphrit, eight children were born to this union, four boys and four girls all of whom have grown to adults. The family continued to reside in the vicinity of Grandview until 1886 when they moved to their present home near Newport. Mrs. Syphrit received injuries from a fall in Dec. from which she suffered most of the winter, but had mostly recovered when that fatal disease, lung fever laid its hold upon her. She was a faithful member of the Methodist Protestant church of which most of her family are members. The funeral was held at the Fairview church on the following day conducted by the Rev. ? A small mound in the Fairview churchyard marks her last earthly resting place.
