Joseph Schofield died at his home in Port Louisa township, Thursday, March 24th 1892, at 10 o'clock a. m. in the 85th year of his age. For some months he had been in declining health and like a candle burning low, the flickering light cast a feeble ray until it was extinguished. Joseph Schofield was born in Manchester England, Nov. 11, 1807, the son of Samuel and Mary Schofield and the last survivor of six children. His early days were spent in a cotton factory as a spinner. On the 26th of May, 1831 he was united in marriage with Charlotte Sinister, who was also born in Manchester, Sept. 7, 1809.

Together they set sail for America, landing at Philadelphia after a voyage of 42 days. By railroad to Pittsburgh, where they took a flat boat for Cincinnati, locating on a 40 acre tract of timber land in Franklin co. Indiana. In 1852 he sold out and emigrated to Iowa, landing at Pt. Louisa, and soon after purchased the west half of section 24 in that township, where he continued to reside until his death.

To Mr. and Mrs. Schofield were born nine children, five born in England and four in America, six of whom survive him, three sons and three daughters. The mother died some years ago at the ripe age 75. The parents were devoted members of the U. P. church and reared their children in the same faith. Mr. Schofield was a man of plain and simple tastes, honorable and upright in his dealings and highly respected by his neighbors. His funeral occurred on Saturday at 10 a. m., from the Harrison church, Rev. Turner of Crawfordsville preaching the discourse. The remains were interred in the Harrison cemetery. All the children were present at the funeral except a daughter who lives at Pawnee, Neb. and she had only left for home a few days before his death, after spending about two months with him.
