Joel Brownson, one of the pioneers of Louisa county, died at his home in Columbus City last Saturday. Mr. B. was born at Franklin, Delaware county, N. Y. on May 18, 1812 and was consequently over 78 years of age. He was married to Mrs. Jane Pierpoint at Three-mill-bay, new York in 1856. She and two children still survive him. His son, Milan, is at home and his daughter, Mrs. Jones lives in Kansas.

Mr. B. united with the Baptist church when 18 years of age and retained his membership in that church until his death. He came to this county in 1837 in company with James Blanchard of this place. They both settled some 5 miles northwest of Wapello where they resided for many years. Later Mr. B. moved to Columbus City. The funeral occurred Sunday at the Baptist church at Columbus City and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery there. Rev. Bancroft preached the funeral sermon.
