Mrs. H. M. Letts, one of this community's most prominent women, Passed away at the family home in this city, Tuesday evening, October 31 at 6:30 following an illness of several months. Mrs. Letts, whose maiden name was Nellie Springer, was a daughter of Judge and Mrs. Francis Springer, distinguished pioneers of this county who came here in 1838 and located south of Columbus City. She was born at the family homestead, December 8, 1860 and was educated in the schools of Burlington and later took special educational training at Galesburg and Ottumwa. May 5, 1880 she was united in marriage to H. M. Letts, prominent farmer, stockman who also served as state senator for this district. His sudden death, ten years ago, left the cares of a large estate upon her hands, but she was fully competent to cope with its problems.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George Remley, Raton, New Mexico and Mrs. Earl Brown, of Emmettsburg and one son, Warren S. Letts of this city. She is also survived by five grandchildren and three brothers, Attorney Arthur Springer, of Wapello; Judge Frank Springer, of Washington, D. C. and Charles Springer, of Cimarron, New Mexico, all of whom were here to attend the funeral service which was held this Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. R. S. Hughes, of Chicago. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
