Mrs. Mary L. Van Auken, an esteemed resident of this community for more than forty-five years, was called suddenly by death at her home on South Hill Sunday morning at 6:30 following a brief illness of only a few hours. Mary L. Walton was born at La Porte, Indiana,May 1, 1845 where she spent her young womanhood and was united in marriage to Mr. George L. Van Auken, a veteran of the Civil War, December 11, 1864. A few years later they moved to Iowa and in 1869 located in this community. For a number of year Mr. Van Auken was employed as a brakeman on the local Rock Island lines, but later took up his trade as a shoemaker, which he followed until his dead in this city, February 7, 1910.

Early in life Mrs. Van Auken was converted and identified with the Methodist church of this city. During the past two years she has not enjoyed good health. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. D. W. McAvoy, of Chicago and one son, George Van Auken, of this city. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Methodist church conducted in the Columbus City cemetery under the auspices of the Silver Leaf Rebekahs.
