The people of this community were grieved Thursday morning of last week, when word was sent from the home on West Hill, of the death of William Singleton, following an illness of several months. Mr. Singleton was born at Piedmont, Virginia, October 14, 1849 and came with his parents in childhood to Iowa City, where they resided for several years. A few years later they moved to a farm near Conesville where Mr. Singleton grew to manhood. Twenty-one years ago he moved to this city. For a number of years he was associated with James McKee in a meat market in this city. He was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends for his sterling honesty and business ability.

On the fifteenth of July in 1870, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Aiken, who with two sons and one daughter, survives to mourn his death. The sons are Fred, of this city and John, of Conesville and the daughter is Mrs. Newton Cecil, of Muscatine. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. R. R. Ricketts and Mrs. Nat Northey, of Waterloo and one brother, Edward Singleton, of Runio. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the home on West Walnut, conducted by Rev. G. A. Ingle, of Cone and interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
