John T. McChesney, a venerable resident of this community for many years, died last Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Potter, where he had been cared for several months. Deceased was born at New Boston, Ill., December 18, 1842, the son of J. T. S. and Rebecca (Clark) McChesney. The family came to Louisa county in 1860. The father died in December, 1869 and the mother continued to live in the home place for many years, dying in 1908.

Our subject remained on the home farm until he was 21 years of age, when he took up farming on his own. After farming for a year he yielded to a desire to travel and went to California, where he remained eighteen moths. He returned home and took up farming on the old homestead.

August 16, 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Collins, daughter of John and Mary Ann Collins. She survives along with two daughters and four sons, as follows: Addie, wife of George Potter and Florence, wife of W. C. Archibald, James, John and Lee McChesney, all of this community; Emory McChesney of McLaughlin, S. D. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Stephens of Grandview and Mrs. W. W. Nye of Hiawatha, Kansas and one brother, James S. of this city.

Mr. McChesney was a staunch democrat, he served at township trustee and also as treasurer and director of the school board. Funeral services were held from the McChesney home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T. S. Pool, of Mt. Pleasant, assisted by Rev. G. Winter of the Wapello Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Wapello cemetery.
