Martin Edgar Bemis was born in Elm Grove Township, Louisa county, Iowa, April 2, 1868 and was killed by a train in Muscatine, Iowa, August 11, 1923, aged 55 years, 4 months and 9 days. In 1887 he was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Thompson to which union was born one son, Wesley. In 1899 he was again married to Mrs Henrietta Shaefer, who preceded him in death. Up until this time his entire life had been spent in Elm Grove township, but in 1912 he moved to Muscatine where on July 13, 1913 he was united to Mrs. Hopkey, who now mourns his death. He is survived by his wife, one son Wesley of Drakesville, Iowa, three sisters, Mrs. Amy Donahoo, Mrs. Susan Jennings and Mrs. Lina Diller, all of Winfield, and two stepsons, Wm, and Alvin Shaefer and three step daughters.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Spring Run Evangelical church and was conducted by Rev. G. H. Bamford. Interment was in Spring Run cemetery.
