John Colton, one of the oldest citizens of Louisa county, died at his home in Union township, Thursday morning, August 9th, after a brief illness. John Colton was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania, April 27, 1839. At the age of three years he came with his parents to Iowa territory and that same year (1842) his father entered land from the United States government. The same farm has been his home continuously ever since. He saw the country steadily develop and in this growth he had a marvelous fare. His life covered a marvelous age of development in mechanical lines, in all of which he took a great interest. He was a man of few words, believing in deeds instead of words.

His wife and two daughters preceded him in death. For several years his nephew Lee Colton and family, have made their home with him. He lived happily and in comfort until just a short time ago. He was ill only 36 hours. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at ten o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. Russell Prewitt with interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
