Word was sent from the home Sunday evening that James E. Gray, had passed over after an extended illness of several months. James E. Gray, was one of Louisa county's oldest native sons. He was born on the same farm upon which he resided until his death, March, 21, 1849 and died, August 19, 1923, at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 29 days. His parents, William and Sarah (Stronach) Gray, were natives of England and Maryland respectively, the father coming to this country in 1840. Mr. Gray devoted his attention largely to the breeding and raising of fine shorthorn cattle.

On the 22nd of November, 1877, Mr. Gray was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Dawdy and to them three children were born, two of whom, on son, C. Earl Gray, of Oakland, California and one daughter, Mrs. C. E. Pierce, with the wife survive to mourn his demise. One daughter, Ethel, preceded him in death at the age of two years. He is also survived by one brother, William H. Gray, of Libby, Montana.

While he was not identified with any of the churches he believed in God and Christian principles. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon conducted by Elder B.L. Nay, of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
