William Smith was born February 22, 1847 in Brown county, Illinois and departed this life on Tuesday, March 6th, 1923, at the age of 76 years, one week and five days. He was three times married. He was married in 1865 to Sarah Hignight, of Brown county, Illinois. To this union three children were born, Alvin, Maggie and Ella. The first two died in infancy. Ella, is now the wife of Albert Shoopman, of Brown county, Illinois. In 1877 he was again married to Amanda Rutt. To this union five children were born, James, Joe, Leonard and two babies who died in infancy. Leonard passed way at the age of sixteen years. Mrs. Smith passed away June 6, 1899.

In 1901 he was united in marriage to Alice Adle Holland. To this union eight children were born, namely, Gale, Fern, Phrone, Evelyn, Lavally, Dolly, Wm Jr. and Robert, all of whom with the mother survive to mourn his death. He is also survived by two steps daughters, Mrs. Chet Hainey, of Wapello and Mrs. Ira Temple, of Muscatine and one step son, Wm Rutt, residing near Cairo and one brother, Charles Smith of Morning Sun and one sister, Mrs. Ella Perry, of Brown county, Illinois. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

A number of years ago he united with the Louisa Center Baptist. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Cairo Church of God conducted by Rev. C. E. Riddington of Rariton, Illinois. Interment was made in the Spring Run cemetery.
