Page 1John Welch, one of the oldest resident of Louisa county and Columbus City, died at his home in Columbus City, Monday, October 10, at the age of 94 years. The end came peacefully after an illness of one week. John Welsh was born in London, England, June 24, 1827. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Glennon, of Manchester, England, in September 1852.
Soon after their marriage Mr. Welch volunteered for service in the English navy and took an active part in the Crimean war between England and Russia during the years of 1853 and 1854. At the close of the war, he sailed with his family for America and arrived in New York February 1856. After spending two years in New York and Chicago he came to Columbus City in 1858. At the beginning of the Civil War he volunteered his services and listed February 28, 1862 in Co. E. of the 16th Iowa infantry. He served for a little over three years and was mustered out March 28, 1865.
Eight children were born to them, four of whom survive to mourn his death. He is survived by his second wife, who prior to her marriage was Miss Jane Louise Gilchrist. The surviving children are: John Welch, of Newton, Kansas; George M. of Omaha; Sherman, of Washington, Iowa and Mrs. W. F. Marshall, of Worthing, South Dakota, all of whom were here at the funeral services.
Mr. Welch was an earnest Christian man. After the dissolution of the Congregational church in Columbus City, of which he had been a member for a number of years, he united with the Baptist church, February 20, 1876 and was a faithful member until it disbanded the Columbus City organization. Funeral service were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church at Columbus City conducted by Rev. C. L. Wilson. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
