Page 1Mrs. Alvira A. Phillips, one of the few remaining pioneers of Louisa county, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning, August 30, 1921, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eugene Lewis, where she has made her home the past eleven years, except for two years in Oklahoma City with her daughter, Mrs. A. Gilchrist. Alvira A. Spafford was born in Jefferson county, Indiana, February 27, 1832. Her father, Orlando O. Spafford, was a veteran of the war of 1812. In 1842 he came with his family to Louisa county and being a carpenter by trade he built many of the early houses between Columbus City and Morning Sun.
November 1, 1851, she was united in marriage to Jesse Philips and moved with him to Columbus City there they made their home until his death, September 15, 1910. Mrs. Philips is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Lewis of this city and Mrs. Anna Gilchrist, of Oklahoma City and one son, Wesley Philips of Kansas City. She is also survived by six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, conducted by Rev. C. L. Wilson, with interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
