Page 1Dr. W. S. Grimes, one of the most prominent men in southeastern Iowa, passed away at this home in Wapello, Iowa, Tuesday June 7, at 4 p. m. For nearly half a century he practiced medicine in Wapello. W. S. Grimes was born (can't read) When only 19 years old, he enlisted in Co. B., 59th Virginia regiment and served until their capture at Roanoke Island. Was afterwards identified with Co. B, 26th Virginia battalion and served during the entire war. He came to Iowa in July, 1867.
On June 23, 1875, he was married to Mrs. Abbie Baker Grimes, who died in 1880, leaving him with two little girls, Ida L. and Kittie M. On September 15, 1881, he married Laura E. Thompson, and one daughter, Florence was born to this union. He leaves to mourn, his widow and three daughters, Ida L., wife of Dr. W. S. Ingham of Canyon, Texas, Kittie M., wife of Fred Heller of Jerseyville, Ill., and Florence L, wife of Oscar Steigieder, of Packwood, Iowa, besides four grandchildren and numerous relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the home Thursday at 2:30 p. m., under the auspices of Masonic lodge. Interment in Wapello cemetery.
