Page 1The body of E. H. Diamond was removed from the Iowa river near Wapello, Sunday, June 6th, just six weeks from the time he disappeared from the Iowa river bridge east of this city. A heavy truck jack belonging to Mr. Diamond was fastened securely to the body by a hitch rein and then wrapped about his right leg in such a manner that swimming would be impossible.
(from Page 8) The remains were taken to the Keck Undertaking Parlors where positive identification was made by means of his clothing, false teeth and letters found in his pockets. Mr. Diamond, who was a former well known business man of this city, had been working for several weeks for H. S. Turkington and Saturday evening, April 23rd, after buying three gallon of gasoline from Oren Lee at the Go Gas station about nine o'clock he drove to the east river bridge, where a short time later his car was discovered with the lights on and the engine running. The car was standing near the center of the bridge. The river was dragged continuously with no results. A sentiment gradually developed that perhaps the body was not in the river but that Mr. Diamond had used this method to disappear.
The body was brought to this city Monday afternoon and interred in the Columbus City cemetery as per his request in a letter which was found soon after his disappearance. Brief services were conducted at the grave by Rev. W. E. Ruston and the I. O. O. F. of this city.
Earl H. Diamond was born in Jackson township, Steuben county, Indiana, August 28, 1879 and died in Louisa county, Iowa, April 23, 1921, aged 41 years, 7 months and 25 days. He was the son of Ira C. and Mary A. Diamond, both deceased. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Florence McCoy, of Lima, Ohio; Mrs. Irene Rinehart and Mrs. Adeline Triplett, of Annola, Indiana and Mrs. Cynthia Rinehart, of Ft. Wayne, Indiana and one brother, Chas. Diamond, of Gering, Nebraska. Mr. Diamond was a member of the loyal I. O. O. F. and Iowana lodges.
