Mrs. Esther McCan, one of the pioneer residents of Louisa county, and for many years an active worker in community welfare, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Blakeley, at Custer City, Oklahoma, Friday, March 11, 1921. Mrs. McCan suffered a fall last summer which kept her bedfast for several months but during the winter she steadily gained in health and a few weeks ago she made plans to visit her daughter at Custer City Oklahoma. Mrs. Blakeley came to accompany her home with her and they left Columbus City Monday evening March 4th. Mrs. McCan enjoyed the varied scenery until they reached Enid, Oklahoma, where she suffered a paralytic stroke. Medical attendance was secured there and she was taken on to Custer City where she grew steadily worse and passed peacefully away Friday, March 11th.

Mr. and Mrs. Blakeley returned with the body to this city arriving Sunday evening and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the U. E. church at Cairo, conducted by Rev. Coggshall, of the Methodist church of Winfield, assisted by Rev. Roths, of Cairo. Interment was made in the Cairo cemetery.

Esther LeCornu was born November 18, 1840, on Jersey island, in the English Channel and came to America with her parents at the age of 11 years. They landed in New York city and came then to Louisa county where in the latter part of 1851 they located on a farm near the present station of Marsh. Here she was married September 3, 1867 to B. K. McCan. They made that neighborhood their home until the breaking out of the Civil War when Mr. McCan enlisted and served until the end of the conflict. Afterward they made their home in Kansas, Illinois and Missouri the death of Mr. McCan occurring in this latter state, December 24, 1884. Mrs. McCan then returned to Louisa and county. Early in life she became a member of the Methodist church at Prairie Chapel.

She is survived by her son, J. W. McCan, of the Amity Neighborhood and her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Blakeley, of Custer City, Oklahoma and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One son at the age of three years and nine months and one daughter at the age of nine months preceded her to the better land.
