Nancy M. Hamilton, one of the best known and highly esteemed pioneer residents of Louisa county, passed away in death at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Prudence Dougherty, at Fairfield, Wednesday morning, February 16th at eight o'clock, following an illness of five or six weeks. Nancy M. Moore, was born March 23, 1838, at Buster, Miami county, Ohio and came east with her parents in early childhood. In 1853 she was united in marriage to Alva S. Smith and they immediately went to housekeeping on a farm near Columbus City.

Mrs. Smith bravely faced the future wither five little ones, three of who later died and two of who survive, Mrs Prudence Dougherty of Fairfield, with who she made her home the past eight months and Mrs. Harriet Holland, of Marshalltown. In 1869 she was united in marriage to Jesse Hamilton and moved with him to a farm near Morning Sun.

To them six children were born, four of whom died in infancy. The surviving are John Hamilton, of Morning Sun and Mrs. Mary Croson, of Brocket, North Dakota. Mrs. Hamilton was also mother to three step children, who also survive, Mrs. Frank Clark, of Wapello; Arnold Hamilton, of Ft Madison and Will Hamilton, of Morning Sun. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Mrs. Hamilton was converted in early childhood and united with the Methodist church.

She was devoted to her home and her children. The body, accompanied by Mrs. Dougherty and Mrs. Holland, was brought to Morning Sun where funeral services were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. F. M. Smith, assisted by Rev. Newsom. Interment was made in the Rice cemetery.
