Page 8J. E. Davis, a former resident of Wapello, died at his home in West Branch early Sunday morning after a short illness, his death being due to enlargement of the heart. J. E. Davis was born in Muscatine, Iowa, January 6, 1868, and came to Wapello with his parents, E. P. and Margaret (Hacker) Davis, when a child. He grew to manhood in that city and worked for a time at the printer's trade. Later he learned the baker's trade in Muscatine and opened a bakery in Wapello, which he conducted for a few years. He then worked in bakeries at Columbus Junction and Wapello until 1908, when he purchased a West Branch bakery and continued in business there until his death.
In 1897 he was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Armbright at Columbus Junction, and to their union was born two children, Gladys Marie and Harlan Dean. Besides his wife and children he leaves his mother, Mrs. Margaret Davis, of Wapello; three brothers, Will of Wapello; Fred of Chicago; Henry of Fairgault, Minn.; and one sister, Mary, of Wapello.
Mr. Davis was active in the business affairs of West Branch and had been manager of the band there for many years. He was a charter member of the Woodman lodge in Wapello and held his membership there until death. The body was brought to Wapello Tuesday afternoon and funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in the Wapello cemetery.
