Thomas Maxwell, one of Conesville's most respected citizens, passed away to the great beyond Friday morning June 29, 1917 at 4 o'clock in the morning after an illness of several weeks although he had not been in robust health for a long time. About 2 1/2 months ago he became seriously ill and was taken to Iowa City to the University hospital were he submitted to an operation which proved successful at the time. He remained at the hospital five weeks a very sick man his wife never leaving him administering to him all she could. All of the five weeks he longed to be brought back to his home which at last the doctors consented to knowing that life was short for him. He was brought home where his loved ones could be with him more and he could be in his own home. While at the hospital pneumonia developed which finally resulted in tuberculosis and in his weakness his old trouble with strangulation of the bowels returned. All that loving hands could do was done.

Thomas Maxwell was born July 3, 1862 and died June 29, 1917 attaining the age of 54 years, 11 months and 26 days. He was the son of T. J. and Mary Boggs Maxwell and was a native of Louisa county and while yet quite young he moved with his parents to Muscatine county which ever since has been his home. On March 11, 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Snyder, of Cone, and three children came to bless this home, Roy Lawrence, who resides on his father's farm, two miles south of Cone, Maud J., wife of George Dyche, of Cone and Miss Lorena M. who is deprived of a father of the age of 9 years. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Erma, Edyth, Lester and Lela Maxwell and his aged mother who resides at Cone, one sister, Mrs. Cora Helverson and three brothers, Robert, Harry and William, all living near Cone and one half brother, Ab Maxwell of Madison, Kan., and one half sister, Mrs. James Sweagle, of Oklahoma.

The funeral was held at the home one-half mile south of Cone Sunday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by the Rev. W. R. Ruston of Columbus Junction assisted by Rev. Wm. Oelrich of Cone. The service at the grave was conducted by the I. O. O. F. lodge No. 365 of Columbus Junction which attended in a large body to help lay their fellow brother peacefully away. Interment at Cone cemetery.

Mr. Maxwell was one of the organizers of the Conesville Savings Bank in 1902 and also held the office of president of said bank. He also had held several responsible offices, township trustee, road supervisor, constable and was also a member of the school board for 12 years and at the time of his death owned quite an extensive acreage of land.
