George W. Gipple, died at Letts Wednesday, July 11th at 2:30 in the afternoon. Mr. Gipple celebrated his ninetieth birthday anniversary at Letts, May 4th and death was due to the weaknesses of old age. Mr. Gipple having been bedfast for several weeks. Mr. Gipple was born near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, May 4, 1827. His parents were George and Mary (Stroh) Gipple. In 1847 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ellen Brooks, also a native of Pennsylvania and a daughter of Alexander and Anna (Barnes) Brooks. The young couple began their domestic life on a farm in Pennsylvania where they resided until they came to Louisa county in 1852. Locating in Grandview township near Grandview, Mr. Gipple purchased a 40 acre tract of raw prairie which he developed into a fine farm and later added to it finally selling it and purchasing a fine farm in Muscatine county which they made their home until February 1888 when he and his wife moved to the town of Letts.

Mr. Gipple was prominent in the affairs of the community and held a number of important offices. Mr. Gipple was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. His wife died several years ago. He is survived by eight children as follows: Mrs. Emma Sharp, of Falls City, Nebraska; Mrs. Anna Hudler, of Letts; Mrs. Cynthia Dollarhide, of Audubon, Iowa; Mrs. Carrie Holtz, of Sweetland; Charles W. and Lincoln U. Gipple, of Letts; Edward B. Gipple, of Winfield and Harvey W. Gipple, of Bentonville, Arkansas. He is also survived by 3 brothers, John S. Gipple, who makes his home with his son, T. J. Gipple in the Spring Run Neighborhood; Charles of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Isaiah B. Gipple of Grandview and by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Zimmerman, of Grandview and Mrs. Julia Eggs, of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at Letts Friday afternoon a 2 o'clock and were largely attended. Rev. T. F. Barker, of Keota had charge of the service. Interment was made in the Letts cemetery.
