Samuel E. Thomas, a well known resident of this county, died at the Mercy hospital at Davenport, Tuesday night at 11 o'clock, November 28, 1916 where he had been the past three weeks. Mr. Thomas, who for the past year has made his home with his son, Harold B. Thomas, in this city, had not been well for several months and three weeks ago went to Davenport for an operation. Mr. Thomas was born in Harrison county, Ohio, October 8, 1839 and came to Iowa in 1865, locating first in Cedar county. He was married March 9, 1871 to Miss Alice Bent, who died in 1908. Her father, C. D. Bent, died just a few weeks previous to the death of Mr. Thomas. For a number of years they resided on a farm near Grandview and then moved again to Cedar county. In 1882 they returned to Louisa county. After the death of his wife Mr. Thomas continued to reside on the farm until last winter when he held a closing out sale and moved to this city and made his home with his son. H. B. Thomas.

Mr. Thomas early in life was converted and joined the Friends church, retaining his membership in that organization until the time of his death. Two sons, Harold B. Thomas of this city and DeWitt C. Thomas, of Milwaukee and two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Wilson, of West Branch and Mrs. Wm Miles, of Stuart and two brothers, C. G. Thomas, of Des Moines and W. A. Thomas, of Prairie City, survive him. Funeral services were held at the home of his son in this city at 10:30 Friday morning conducted by Rev E. C. Brooks and were largely attended. Interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
