John D. Howell, a resident of this county, died at his home near Fredonia last Thursday, September 14th. Mr. Howell was an industrious and progressive farmer. John DeVoe Howell was born in Davenport on the fourth of June, 1872 and died of a lingering illness on the fourteenth of September, 1916, at the age of 44 years, 3 months and 10 days. With the exception of 10 years which were spent in the eastern states, he made his home in Davenport until February, 1911. when he moved with his family to Fredonia. He was a member of the Mount Ida Presbyterian church of Davenport and later of the Central Presbyterian church of Columbus Junction. In 1893 he married Miss Ida Basmann, also of Davenport and to this union were born ten children, Harriet, Leon, Nellie, Robert, Jessie, Paul, Russell, Willis, Ralph and Donald all of whom survive him. He also leaves one brother, Mr. E. M. Howell of Muscatine. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. W. E. Russell. Interment in the cemetery at Columbus City.
