Miss Elizabeth Hughes, a sister of W. H. Hughes, of this city died at Cedar Falls Sunday morning at nine o'clock, April 2, 1916, following an illness of three days although she had not enjoyed good health since an attack of la gripe several months ago. However she persistently carried on her educational work and was one of the instructors at the Inspirational Institute held at Wapello, March 23-24. Miss Hughes was born in South Wales about 54 years ago and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hughes, to America in 1870 and located in Owatona, Minnesota. about five years later they moved to Louisa county and located in the Welsh Neighborhood. She then attended the eastern Iowa Normal School in this city and graduated with high honors in the class of 1886.

She became assistant superintendent of the Columbus Junction public schools and later after being superintendent of the school at State Center for three years she was elected county superintendent of Louisa county for three successive terms. She then accepted a position as instructor in English and mathematics at the Iowas State teacher's College at Cedar Falls, retaining this position for the past sixteen years. Recently she was elected as a member of the Board of Supervisor of the State Teacher's College. Funeral services were held at Cedar falls Monday after which the remains were brought to this city and taken to the home of her brother, W. H. Hughes, where short services were conducted Tuesday morning by Rev. Frank Gagety, of Washington. Interment was made in the Cambrian cemetery in the Welsh Neighborhood. She is survived by her brothers, W. H. Hughes, of this city and Eben Hughes, of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. Rowland Williams, of Lucas, Iowa and Mrs. John Abbott, of Cedar Rapids.
