Henry Hoben, a prominent farmer and stockman of Union township, died at his home near Gladwin Christmas morning at half past three o'clock having suffered a stroke of apoplexy and being sick but a very short time. John Henry Hoben was born in Hamburg, Germany, 80 years ago and was baptized in the German Lutheran church when a child. He left his native land at the age of 17 and came to America. He came first to New York where he remained for several years when the west began to appeal to him and he came to Iowa where he was united in marriage in the fall of 1857 to Miss Elizabeth Buckner.

When the terrible Civil war threatened to destroy his adopted country he shouldered a gun and marched to the front, enlisting at Albia, Iowa, August 9, 1862. He served fifteen months and then owing to very poor health he was honorably discharged at St. Louis, November 19, 1863. He then returned to Louisa county where he has since made his home. He engaged in farming and stock buying. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hoben, eight of whom preceded their father to the Great Beyond. He is survived by his wife and one son, Will at home and one daughter, Mrs. J. L. Orr, of Berkley, South Dakota. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and two great godchildren. The funeral services were held at the Gladwin church Monday morning at 11:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T. M Balcoff, of this city. Interment at Union cemetery.
