The people of Wapello were shocked for the second time within a week last Wednesday evening when Mrs. James E. Lee, a pioneer and well known resident of this county, took ill while on her way down town and died in a few minutes after being carried to her home. Mrs. Lee had been in her usual health but had been confined to the house closely this winter on account of illness and serious condition of her husband. Mary Amanda Reeder was born in Concord township, near Fredonia, August 20, 1844. Her parents were Rev. Macajah and Nancy Reeder. She was married to James E. Lee, February 27, 1863 and to them eight children were born, five to whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, James E. Lee, one daughter, Mrs. Bailey Murray, of Cairo and two sons, Robert M. and Oren R. Lee, of Fredonia. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Ellen Snyder, of Marshalltown and one half brother, John Reeder, of Oskaloosa. Fourteen grandchildren also survive to mourn her death.

She was converted in her youth and joined the United Evangelical church but later united with the Methodist church of which she remained a consistent member until her death. The remains were brought to Columbus Junction Thursday night to the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. E. V. Bodwell. Funeral services were held Friday morning at 11 o'clock at the Methodist church at Fredonia, conducted by Rev. E. C. Brooks assisted by Rev. George Stauffacher, of the United Evangelical church, of Cairo, who also conducted the services at the grave. Interment in the Cedar Bethel church.
