After an illness of almost one year with heart trouble, Mrs. J. W. Oats, passed away at her home on Cherry Avenue in this city, Sunday morning, December 5, 1915. Isabella Johnston Duncan was the daughter of James Kennedy and Margaret (Johnston) Duncan, who came to this county from Tennessee in 1840. The country at that time was a wild uncultivated district and many hardships were endured before Louisa county presented even an indication of what it is today. Mr. Duncan located on a farm northwest of this city to which he added from time to time and here their daughter Isabelle Johnston, was born July 14, 1848. She grew to women hood in this county and September 26, 1867, she was united in marriage to John W. Oats, who came to Iowa when a young man from the state of Indiana. They began housekeeping on a Louisa county farm remaining on the farm in this county until 1902 they removed to Columbus Junction which has since been her home, the husband and father preceding her in death, November 11, 1908.

To them were born five children, one of whom, John K. Oats, died in childhood. The surviving children are; Margaret C., wife of Alba McBride, of this county; Ira A. Oats, of Columbus City, Ada, wife of J. D. Hamil, of Washington county and Arnold D. Oats, at home. She is also survived by one brother, Robert F. Duncan, of this city. Two sisters, Catherine and Sarah and two brothers, S. H. Duncan and J. J. Duncan, having preceded her in death. She was a devoted member of the Reformed church for many years and her earnest, consecrated life was a living testimony of her religious faith. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home conducted by Rev. J. S. Naly, of Tipton, Iowa, editor of the Reformed Church Messenger. Interment was made at Columbus City.
