Isaac Carr Freeland was born November 15, 1831 in Pike county, Ohio, died September 25, 1915, at Fontana, Kansas, aged 83 years, 10 months and 10 days. He was united in marriage to Julia A, Martin in 1853, who preceded him in death December 14, 1903. To this union four children were born, Mrs. Kate E. Barnett and James G. having passed away June 11, 1912 and February 3, 1895, respectively. Two sons G. A. and T. L. of Fontana, Kansas, with whom their father was residing at the time of his death and two brothers E. S. of Ainsworth and W. S. of Wapello, with a number of grandchildren and other relatives and friends survive to mourn his death. He came to Iowa from Ohio by wagon, with his parents in 1849, settling at Grandview, where he lived until 1879, at that time he moved to Letts and a few years later moved to Columbus Junction, where he resided until the death of his wife.

He served in the Civil War in Co. F. 19th Iowa infantry, from August 21, 1861 to June 16, 1865 and was a member in good standing of the G. A. R. at Columbus Junction, He and his wife united with the Methodist church at Grandview in 1856 and remained faithful members of the church until removed by death. He also served as nurse to all the cholera patients at Grandview in 1853, when his father died with the disease. Funeral services were held at the Letts M. E. church, September 27, 1915, at 2 p. m. conducted by the pastor Rev. Phillips. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Letts cemetery.
