Samuel Alexander Buffington was born in Washington county, Iowa, December 11, 1874 and settled with his parents near Columbus Junction, Louisa county, Iowa when he was only a few months of age. He continued to reside in Louisa county, with the exception of the time he served during the Civil war, until the spring of 1913 when he moved with his family two miles southeast of Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo county, Iowa, where he died April 26, 1915, aged 67 years, 4 months and 15 days. He was married to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Bashford at Mr. Pleasant, Iowa, September 1st, 1874. They were the parents of five sons and four daughters, who with their widowed mother survive to mourn his decease.

Mr. Buffington enlisted in Company A. 9th Iowa Cavalry in October 1863, and was mustered into the United Sates service at Davenport, Iowa, November 30, 1863 and served until the close of the Civil war. He was a member of Tom Howard Post No. 101 G.A.R. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in early life and united with the Evangelical church of which he remained a member until his decease. He was a remarkably healthy, robust man until within a few months of his death when he became afflicted with cancer of the stomach, the relentless disease proved fatal. In his death the community has lost an upright, honorable citizen, Tom Howard Post, a faithful member and esteemed comrade, the bereaved family a faithful and affectionate companion and father.

He is survived by his wife and nine children, three half-brothers and one half-sister. The children are: Isaac and Burch Buffington, of near Morning Sun; R. M. Buffington, of Spring Run; Chester, of Mason City; Mrs. Nellie Havenhill, of Wapello; Mrs. Nira VanHorn, of Augres, Michigan; Edna, Laura and Walter, at home. The brothers are J. D., J. A. and Zachariah Hall and the sister Mrs. Lucy Willet, of this city. The body was brought to this city Tuesday evening and taken to the home of his son, R. M. Buffington. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Spring Run church conducted by Rev. T. M. Balcoff, assisted by Rev. George Stauffacher. Interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
