James Owen Brown was born in Sun Fish, Monroe county, Ohio, January 18, 1846 and passed away at his home in Columbus City, Iowa, April 16, 1915, aged 69 years, 2 months and 29 days. He came to Columbus City in 1850 at the age of four years and this place was his home until his death. Mr. Brown was first married to Miss Jennie McCoy whose companionship lasted but six short months. In 1870 he was again married to Elizabeth Jacobs. To this union were born three children. Two little ones and the mother preceded him in death over 25 years ago. One daughter, now Mrs. Fred A. Crawford, grew to womanhood and was with him in his last illness. He was initiated into the Columbus City lodge No. 246 I. O. O. F. in December 27, 1873 and has been a faithful member as long as he was permitted to attend. Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Columbus City at 2:30 p. m. Sunday conducted by Rev. T. M. Balcoff. The Odd Fellows of Columbus City lodge turned out in a body and at the grave they had charge of the service.
