Hannah Sharp Gay was born in Waynefleet, Lincolnshire, England, January 2, 1837. She came to America with her parents when she was 12 years of age and they lived in Aurora, New York, several years and then moved to Iowa. She was married to John Gay in Iowa City in 1861 where they resided until after the war when they moved to Louisa county and then into Conesville where they have since resided except for a few years in Michigan. Father and Mother Gay lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary a joy given to but few. There were born in this family eight children, all of whom are living except the oldest daughter, Susan, who died in Michigan in infancy. There remain to mourn her sudden death, her husband, seven children, Mrs. Amelia Cecil of Hedrick; Frank, of Cone, Miss Fannie, of Iowa City, Richard, of Washington, D. C., Charles, Albert and Miss Anna, of Cone. Sixteen grandchildren and two brothers and three sisters and many friends. For many years, Mother Gay was a faithful member of the Reformed church. She will be sadly missed from the services. Mother Gay passed calmly out of this life Saturday February 6, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 4 days. The funeral services were held at the Reformed church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. E. Ewing. She was laid to rest in the beautiful Cone cemetery.
