Mrs. Martha Rice, a well known resident of Columbus City for many years, died at her home in that city, Saturday morning. January 23, 1915, after an illness of several months. Martha A. Smith was born near Cairo, March 6, 1853 and spent her girlhood there and in the vicinity of Morning Sun. She married to William Clark Rice January 13, 1872 and moved with him to Columbus City. His death occurred about 23 years ago. She is survived by three children, Arthur, Albert and Georgia, at home, and by her aged mother, Mrs. Nancy Hamilton, of Morning Sun and one sister, in Oklahoma. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends who mourn her death. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Columbus City Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Fred Stillwell, of Mt Pleasant pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Mrs. Lottie Peters of Ottumwa and Mrs. Agnes Crouch, of Woodward, Iowa, of the Apostolic Mission. Miss Lorene Derenberg, of Ottumwa, assisted with the singing. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
