W. J. Barringer, a well know citizen of Columbus Junction and a honored survivor of the Civil war, passed to his final reward at his home on West Hill Tuesday morning, July 7, 1914. William J. Barringer was born in Louisa county, October 8, 1841,near Columbus City and died at his home in Columbus Junction, at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 29 days. For nearly three years he has been a patient sufferer from the ailments of advancing age and hardships endured while serving his country. For the past few months he has been confined to his bed and gradually grew weaker until the end came. At the beginning of the Civil war he enlisted in Co. F. of the 25th Iowa and served with bravery and distinction until the close of the war.

In 1865 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Brewer and to them three sons were born: Harry of this city, Garry who preceded him in death and John, of Buffalo, Kan. After the death of his wife he was married again, October 4, 1877, to Mrs. Sarah Ellen Stark, who survives him. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna McCoy of Columbus City. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

A number of years ago he united with Methodist Episcopal church and until his death he remained a true and devout follower of his Savior. He attended church as frequently as his health would permit. The funeral services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. C. Brooks, assisted by Rev. J. C. Kendrick, of Ottumwa. The members of the G. A. R. of which Mr. Barringer was a member, will attend as a guard of honor. Interment will be made in Columbus City cemetery.
