Amos Hammond was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1823 and departed this life, February 12, 1914, at his home in Grandview. He was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Francis in 1842. To this union eight children were born, five of whom are living: Mrs. Lottie Edmondson of Bingham, Neb., Dennis of Portland, Ore., John of Washington state, Mrs. A. C. Buttman at Grandview and Amos, Jr., of Brazil, Ind. Twenty grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren also survive him. Mrs. Nathan Crutchfield, a half-sister of Wapello also survives him. His first wife died in 1858 and he was united in marriage to Mrs. Amy McWilliams.

In early life he became a member of the Church of God, and he maintained family worship and attended church until he became to feeble to go. It was his request that J. R. Hammond, his nephew, should conduct his funeral service, which was held Saturday in the Methodist church at Grandview, assisted by Rev. Bartlett. Interment in the Grandview cemetery. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows, being the oldest member initiated, he being 87 years of age at the time of his initiation.
