The death of Hon. C. A. Carpenter, occurred at his home on West Hill Sunday afternoon at one o'clock following an illness dating from the middle of August. He was conscious almost to the end and a short time before his death he recognized the members of his family. Mr. Carpenter had not enjoyed good health for more than a year and frequently spoke of taking a vacation to visit the Panama canal and other places of interest but the pressure of his law practice demanded his attention. Charles Albert Carpenter was born in Oakland township, Louisa county, Jan 12, 1864 and at the time of his death was 49 years 8 months and 22 days of age. His parents were Cyril and Calista E. (Stickney) Carpenter. The father came to this county in 1840 and the mother was born near Harrison in Port Louisa township in 1839.

He obtained his early schooling in Oakland township and later attended school in this city and at the Iowa City Academy. He then studied law at Iowa City graduating at the age of 20 with the class of 1884. He was not permitted to practice until the age of 21 and spent the summer after graduation on his father's farm. October the first, 1885, he came to Columbus Junction and established a law office and quickly gained the confidence of the entire community. In 1894 he was elected to the state senate from the Muscatine-Louisa district and served two terms with unusual ability. Mr. Carpenter soon became a leader in Iowa in the republican party and at the state convention in 1904 he was chosen as a delegate tot he national convention and assisted in the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt as the republican candidate.

He was united in marriage to Miss Grace A. Wolverton of Iowa City, September 22, 1885. To them four children were born, three of whom with his wife survive to mourn his death, one child, a daughter, died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mary Carpenter Fitzsimmons, of Muscatine; C. A. Carpenter, Jr., a practicing attorney of this city, and William E. or Billy, aged 12. He is also survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Calista Carpenter, of this city and three brothers, Harry M. and Arthur of Overton, Neb., and Cyril of Alamosa, Colorado and three sisters, Mrs. Arthur Springer, of Wapello; Mrs. F. L. Darrow and Mrs. C. J. McWilliams, of this city. His father died in 1900. The funeral was held Tuesday on the high school campus at 2:30 o'clock following a short service at the home.
