Daniel Oscar Loy was born September 8, 1850, at Mt. Gilead, Ohio and departed from this life at his home at Atkinson, Illinois, March 4, 1913, aged 62 years. At the age of fourteen he moved from Ohio to Monticello, Illinois, where he began the manufacture of brick and time which vocation he continued until his death. Mr. Loy was a member of the Clay Workers' Association and for two years was vice president of the organization and later he was elected president. He was chosen to conduct the Illinois clay exhibit at the World's Fair at Chicago in 1893. Soon after this he moved to Atchison, Illinois where he continued in the manufacture of clay products.

May 1, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Lula A. Dickey, daughter of Mrs. Isabel Dickey of near Columbus Junction. Early in life he united with the Presbyterian church and upon moving to Atchison he joined with the Congregational church of which he remained a faithful member until his death. In addition to his manufacturing interests, Mr. Loy wrote several books of poetry and in this field gained much renown. He is survived by his wife, two brothers, Robert and Martin of Macomb, Ohio, two sisters, Melissa of Macomb, Ohio and Mrs. Joseph Barnhill of Marion, Iowa. Funeral services were held at the home at Atkinson and the remains brought to this city Thursday for interment that afternoon in the Columbus City cemetery.
