Charles Curtis Richey, son of Newton B. and Catharine Richey, was born on a farm near Lone Tree, October 19, 1872, and grew to manhood on the old homestead. He was married to Matie C. Miller May 12, 1897, his wife and two children, Alfred N., aged four and Charles A., aged fourteen months survive him.

He came to Columbus Junction about two years ago from his farm in Oakland township and purchased and improved the tract of land one half mile west of town, where he died on the evening of July 16th, after a short and extremely painful illness. The funeral service was held at his home Wednesday morning, his pastor Rev. J. C. Kendrick, officiating. From there the body was taken to Lone Tree, where a short burial service was held and interment made in the Richey family lot in the Lone Tree cemetery.

Mr. Richey was converted at Crawfordsville in 1893 and became a member of the Methodist church and proved a true and faithful member until death. His death was due to a telescoping of the intestines from a jar caused by jumping from a harvesting machine that he was running on July 14th. On Sunday it was decided, as a last resort, to perform a surgical operation with some slight chance of saving his life. He rallied from the shock of the operation for a time and then slowly sank into his last sleep and died about 8:30 Sunday evening.
