Our people were shocked Thursday evening to learn of the sudden death of Sam W. Pickett, son of the late J. K. Pickett of this place. His death was a very sudden one though he had been confined to his home and unable to attend to his business for a week or more. The remains were brought to this place Saturday accompanied by his wife and son and a sister, Mrs. Cunningham, whose present home is in Chicago. The funeral took place from the residence of W. P. Paugh at three o'clock the same afternoon conducted by Rev. J. R. Vance. The services were very short and simple after which he was laid to rest by the side of his father in the Columbus City cemetery.

All the immediate members of the family were in attendance. These were Mrs. Pickett, the mother and Hattie, the youngest sister, of Washington; Mrs. Cunningham, a sister, of Chicago; and Mrs. Ollie Hawley, the other sister, of Fairmont, West Virginia. Mrs. Pickett, her son, Walter, twelve years old, and Miss Hattie went to Dubuque Monday. Miss Hattie will remain with her until about the first of April. Mrs. Pickett has not yet fully decided as to what she will do, but will probably go to her mother, who now lives in Ames. Mr. Hawley has returned to his home in West Virginia. His wife will follow in a dew days, accompanied by her mother, who will spend a year or so with her.
