Mrs. Martha Curtis fell asleep in Christ early in the morning October 15th. She was born in Steuben county, New York, December 11th, 1823, passing away at the age of 77 years, 10 months and four days. She was united in marriage to T. M. Curtis in 1849. To this union were born ten children. Mr. Curtis and two of the children, Shepherd and Hattie, preceded the mother to the heavenly home. The surviving children are, Samuel of Blue Mound, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Hutchinson of Haverhill, Kansas; Abner of Bayard, John of Grandview, Thomas of Letts, Mrs. David Parsons, Mrs. M. P. Parsons and Mrs. Minnie Harrison of Letts, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis saw much of pioneer life, both in their work for their livelihood and in the church and were devoted to their family and to their Christian duty in the church and in the home. Mrs. Curtis was a sufferer for years and often expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ. She who had been such a faithful wife and mother, spoke of her life often with a sense of unworthiness, humbly saying she "She had done what she could but would gladly have done more."

As the end drew near, her desire to "go home" became intense, and she prayed for hours to be released. She bade her children and friends goodbye and urged them to "meet her in heaven." In the extremity of her suffering she looked up at her daughter, whispered " I love you' and soon passed away.
