Sarah Gardner was born in Pennsylvania, January 28, 1817. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Jackson, of this place April 12, making her age something over 84 years. When young she came with her parents to the state of Michigan. At the age of 20 years she came to Iowa, where two years after she was united in marriage to H. H. Mickey; theirs was the first marriage license issued in the county. To this union were born 11 children, six daughters and five sons. Of these the daughters are all living; the sons all dead. The former are Mary, wife of the late John C. Sterling; Mrs. Jennie Schanning of Fredonia; Mrs. Margaret Jackson of this place, Mrs. Louie Wilson, Merino, Colorado; Mrs. Alice Huddler, Battle Creek, Michigan, and Mrs. Laura Byram of Des Moines. of the five sons, one, Leander, died in infancy; William died before Atlanta, Georgia in 1864; Byard died at Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1891; Levi, at Fredonia, in 1895, and Hugh L., at Salt Lake City in 1899. All but the last are buried in the Fredonia Cemetery beside their parents. The husband and father died in 1890, soon after celebrating with his wife, their golden wedding.

Mrs. Mickey had been a consistent and devoted church member since 16 years of age; for the 35 years a member of the M. E. church. The funeral services were held at the church in Fredonia, conducted by the Rev. Adams of this place. Rev. Drew also conducted a short service at the home of Mrs. Jackson before leaving that place. She was among the last of surviving pioneers of Louisa county and a truly good woman.
