Josiah Stewart was born in Lee county, Iowa, November 19th, 1841 and died at his home in Columbus Junction, Iowa, February 12, 1894. He was left an orphan at an early age and went to Missouri where he remained until the war broke out. He enlisted in the army and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Fifteen years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Marion who survives him. Six of the seven children born to them are living; these are Susie, Annie, Hattie, Stella, Robbie and Alvin. The eldest is fourteen years of age, the youngest is two. About one year ago Mr. Stewart united with the M. E. here and has lived a consistent Christian since. His health has not been good for a long time and for the past year has been very poor. He was able to be out the morning of his death, shoveling the walks so that his children could go to school. A little while before noon, while at work in house, he fell and in a short time expired. Death came suddenly but he was prepared for it. He seemed to feel that his time on earth was short and the day before he selected the hymns to be sung at his funeral. Mr. Stewart was a very quiet, reserved man, honest, upright, kind and affectionate to his family.
