S. C. Curtis was born in Steuben county, New York, September 9, 1826, and departed this life February 12, 1894, at his home in Columbus Junction, at the age of 68 years. He was brought up on a farm and received his education in the district schools of his native state. In 1844 he removed with his parents to St. Joseph county, Michigan, where in 1852 he was untied in marriage with Miss Harriet Briggs who survives him. Eight children were born of this union, four of whom are living. These are Edward S. of Concord township, T. J.L. of Oakland township, this county, Mrs. Hull of Kansas City, and Wm. L. of Columbus Junction. Mr. Curtis came to Iowa in 1854 first settling in Muscatine county. In 1855 he came to Louisa county. Was a rail road contractor for some years. First bought a farm near Letts; afterwards buying what is known as the Curtis homestead in Concord township. He was for many years a prominent stock buyer in connection with is extensive farming operations. Two years since he left his farm and came to Columbus Junction. Mr. Curtis was, for many years, an active and earnest member of the M. E. church, living a consistent Christian life. he was possessed of a genial and social nature and made many friends. His death was the result of a paralytic stroke which he suffered about two weeks since. The funeral was held at his residence on South Hill, this, Wednesday morning. A large concourse was in attendance. The burial was this afternoon at Letts. Thus passes one of Louisa county's most prominent and most respected citizens.
