Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Thursday, July 6, 1893 page 4

After a long and painful illness, Mr. Evan Morgan passed away Tuesday June 27, 1893, aged 60 years. He was born in Meirionethshire, North Wales, in 1833 and emigrated to this country with his parents, brother and two sisters in 1844. After a stay of a few months in Utica, New York and Newark, Ohio, he came to Iowa territory and located four and one-half miles south-west of Columbus City. When he was nineteen years of age he with a friends started with an ox team across the plains to California where he engaged in mining. When the rebellion broke out in 1861 he enlisted in company D 2nd California volunteer cavalry, and remained in faithful service for over three years, being honorably discharged on September 24, 1864. Soon after this, he started for home via the isthmus of Panama and New York making the trip in one month. In 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Anwyl and settled down on the farm which he had previously purchased and where he resided until his death. His life had been eventful and adventurous, but he was never given to boasting or egotism, being very modest and unassuming. He was of a kind disposition and was beloved by all as was evinced by the vast concourse that assembled Thursday to pay the last tribute to his mortal remains. His character had been above reproach and he bore his long suffering with heroic Christian fortitude setting and example of patient self denial to all about him. His death, though not unexpected, was a shock to the entire community and many hearts were saddened thereby. Funeral services were held at the Welsh Congregational church, where he had long been a consistent member, and were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Lloyd Williams. He leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and a kind, indulgent father.
