James Harmon was born in Blount county, Tennessee, February 12, 1819. On December 24, 1849 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Duncan. To this union were born nine children, three of whom died when young, one daughter, Mrs. Emma Johnston died in 1872 and Harvey, the eldest son, died in Davenport,Iowa, in March 1891. The surviving children are: Mrs. Samuel Mulhern, Mrs. O. P. Wilcox and Mrs Taylor Carlisle and Samuel all of whom are married and resident of Columbus Junction. Mr. Harmon moved to Iowa in 1844 and has been a resident of this vicinity ever since. His wife died in November 1891. His death occurred on Thursday, May 11, 1893, after an illness of nearly three weeks, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. P. Wilcox, of this place. Funeral of Friday from the U. P. church Columbus City. Services conducted by the pastor, Rev. Greer. Mr and Mrs. H. had for many years been consistent members of the united presbyterian church.
