Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Thursday, May 11, 1893 page 1

Mrs. Catherine Shoemaker was born in Adams county, Ohio, February 6, 1822 and died at her home in Columbus Junction, Iowa, May 7, 1893. This would make her age at at time of death 71 years, 3 months and 1 day. On the 29th day of October, 1844, she was united in marriage to J. W. James, and with him she emigrated to Iowa in 1846, settling first at Grandview in this county. A few years subsequently they removed to Washington county, this state, where they made a home until less than a year ago when they came to spend their remaining days in Columbus Junction. To this union were born five children, four sons and one daughter. The latter died when three years of age and lies buried in the cemetery at Grandview. The sons all survive their mother and were all present to attend her during her last sickness. It was their sad privilege to act as her pall bearers when she was laid away in the beautiful cemetery at Columbus City. The sons are John F. and A. S. of Greenfield, Iowa; L. C. of Washington, now traveling for a Boston shoe firm, and C. L., who lives on a farm in Washington county. Mrs. James untied with the methodist church at her home in Ohio when a girl of only fifteen years, and during all the years that have passed since she has true, devoted Christian; as wife, mother and in every relation of life she was always faithful. Besides husband and sons she leaves two sisters in Ohio also an adopted daughter, Dora, who lives in the western part of the state. Mrs. James had been sick only about two weeks, little hopes for her recovery were entertained from the beginning of her sickness. She was perfectly resigned to her fate;" Whatever the Lord will," she said on more than one occasion. The bereaved relatives have the profoundest sympathy of all in their sand affliction. The funeral took place from the Methodist church at 11 o'clock Monday, conducted by Rev. LeCornu assisted by Rev. Williams.
